A portfolio is a work sample, so the site had to make the same argument the work does.

Making it a work sample in itself

Explorations

  • The home page in the spec sheet design: the tagline set large with red margin notes marking the ask and the need, over a faint drafting grid.
The first direction for the home page: frosted glass cards over drifting pastel color fields, with the name set large above the tagline.

The solution

Fig. 3.1 Page titles draw themselves in: a red construction line, then each letter traced in outline and filled with ink.
Fig. 3.2 A featured card expands into its case study. The screenshot and title travel into the header, and travel back on the way home.
Fig. 3.3 Moving between pages: the red underline springs to the new link, the content sinks out and rises in, and the drafting grid never moves.
  1. Headings drawn over the real text

Each page title is traced in by an SVG copy laid exactly over the real text, which stays in place for layout, selection, and screen readers. The copy is measured from the text itself and removed once the ink is filled.

  2. A card that becomes the case study

Opening a case study morphs its card’s image and title into the header with the View Transitions API. Shared names are set only on the card being opened, so no other navigation has an unmatched element to mishandle.

  3. Only the content moves

Page changes move the page, not the paper: the old content sinks out, the new content fades up once the transition ends, and the drafting grid stays still. The red underline springs between links on the same curve.

  4. Prerendered, then hydrated

Every page ships as static HTML with its own styles and scripts linked up front, so it paints complete and never shifts as it loads.
